VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is gearing up for the launch of BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite and the largest spacecraft developed domestically to date. Designed to identify and examine interference impacting global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo, the satellite is scheduled for launch in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The initiative aims to detect jamming and spoofing signals from orbit while collecting data on when and where navigation disruptions occur.

Within a multi-year research and development framework, BEACONSAT will function as a technology demonstrator. Jamming refers to radio interference that blocks or hampers satellite navigation signals, whereas spoofing involves transmitting false navigation data that can lead to incorrect positioning calculations. These satellite navigation systems are critical for aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency services, and other operational systems. The Austrian Defence Ministry anticipates that the data generated will bolster its operational capabilities and deepen its understanding of GNSS interference phenomena.
Leading the BEACONSAT project is GATE Space, a space technology firm based in Schwechat, which holds overall responsibility for the mission. The company, established in 2022 as a TU Wien spin-off, specializes in chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to perform orbital maneuvers. For this project, GATE Space supplies the propulsion technology, satellite structure, and thermal management solutions. The company has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under both atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Austrian innovations form the foundation of the satellite mission
Key components of Austria’s first military satellite are provided by other European firms. Graz-based IGASPIN develops technology capable of detecting and analyzing GNSS interference with high accuracy. Denmark’s Space Inventor supplies additional satellite components, such as the onboard computer. The project combines commercial space hardware with systems designed for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Support from Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure includes approximately 750,000 euros in funding via Austria Wirtschaftsservice.
The European Space Agency also backs the mission, providing co-financing through its ESA Marketplace program for technology demonstrations. This initiative enables commercial space technologies to undergo testing for security-related applications. Austrian officials emphasize that BEACONSAT is a demonstrator rather than a fully operational satellite system. Its primary purpose is to collect data on interference affecting satellite navigation signals from orbit, which will inform the Defence Ministry’s efforts as Austria enhances its military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT Integrates into Austria’s Broader Space Initiatives
The Austrian Defence Ministry is establishing a dedicated space services unit responsible for satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is a part of this evolving organization, with a focus on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy envisions expanding Austria’s use of space infrastructure from solely utilizing space services to operating its own systems and infrastructure. Approved in 2023, the strategy’s implementation will continue through 2035 and beyond.
The scheduled launch in February 2027 remains firm, with a Falcon 9 rocket set to carry BEACONSAT into orbit. Once deployed, the satellite will perform its research by gathering and analyzing GNSS interference data. The project unites Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technology companies. This marks Austria’s first military satellite mission, providing an opportunity to test domestically developed systems aimed at monitoring disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation services.
