European Union Allocates €2.3 Million to Enhance Africa’s Fight Against Cholera Outbreaks

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has announced an emergency humanitarian investment of €2.3 million to combat cholera outbreaks across West and Central Africa. This support aims to aid Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad by funding treatment efforts, disease surveillance, access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. The declaration coincides with a rise in cholera cases across multiple African nations in 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a notable surge primarily in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria is set to receive €1.5 million, representing the largest portion of the aid package. The funds will be used to bolster intervention teams, distribute cholera treatment kits, and procure other vital supplies. Additionally, the investment will enhance the treatment of public water sources and household water systems. Part of the aid will also be allocated to strengthening disease surveillance in remote and underserved regions. The program further encompasses case management, risk communication, and community awareness campaigns as health teams work to limit the spread within affected communities.

According to the latest data from the World Health Organization, a total of 90,049 cholera cases have been reported across 18 countries in Africa through June 28, with 1,528 deaths officially recorded. Nigeria contributed 26,848 cases and 181 fatalities during this period. In June alone, Nigeria reported 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths. WHO reports that Borno State accounts for over 95% of Nigeria’s reported cholera cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno being among the most severely affected areas.

Funds Target Treatment, Water Access, and Disease Monitoring

The Central African Republic is allocated €500,000 to support case management, vaccination campaigns, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs. The funding will also bolster disease surveillance, case detection, and community involvement, including the facilitation of safe and dignified burials during the outbreak. WHO reports that the country has documented 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths as of June 28. The European Commission stated that this funding constitutes part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks impacting these four nations.

Cameroon will receive €100,000 to reinforce efforts in containing the outbreak and ensuring proper patient care in affected communities. The aid will cover additional humanitarian personnel, essential medicines, cholera treatment facilities, and oral rehydration points. As of June 28, WHO reports indicate 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon. Chad will get €200,000 dedicated to water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives, along with community surveillance and case management support. During the same period, Chad reported 109 cases and three deaths.

Nigeria’s Outbreak Drives Regional Rise in Cases

WHO has indicated that the African Region experienced 27,954 new cholera cases in June across 12 countries, representing a 95% increase from May. The region also recorded 284 cholera-related fatalities in that month. Nigeria reported the highest number of new infections, followed by the Congo and South Sudan. The surge in Nigeria is primarily linked to Borno State, where ongoing conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and rainfall have heightened the risk of cholera transmission.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingestion of water or food contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria, can cause rapid dehydration in severe cases, necessitating immediate treatment. The EU’s funding will support measures designed to interrupt transmission chains and improve care access in the impacted regions. The total aid package for the four beneficiary countries is €2.3 million, focusing on treatment capacity, surveillance, vaccination where suitable, safer water supplies, sanitation, and community engagement to manage the ongoing outbreak.
