European Union Announces Expansion of Wildfire Support Efforts Across Member States

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Union has activated additional aircraft, helicopters, ground units, and satellite imagery to assist in combating wildfires overwhelming emergency services across Europe. Belgium and Spain requested aid through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism as fires continue to spread across multiple regions. These new deployments enhance cross-border assistance to national firefighting efforts during the intense 2026 fire season. By the end of July, the extent of burned land in Europe was roughly 2.5 times higher than typical for this period of the year. This support is being provided following individual national requests rather than a continent-wide emergency declaration.

EU expands wildfire response across Europe with support
European countries expand joint wildfire response as fires strain emergency services.

In Belgium, Sweden dispatched two rescEU firefighting planes to aid crews managing the Hautes Fagnes wildfire. Germany and Norway each sent two helicopters, with additional support from Dutch air units. EU officials confirmed the deployment of two Dutch helicopters, while Walloon authorities reported one Dutch helicopter among active resources late Monday. The EU’s latest assessment indicated over 3,000 hectares had burned in the Belgian fire zone. Ground crews from approximately 20 emergency zones in Belgium also continued efforts on the ground.

By Monday evening, nearly 500 personnel and over 120 vehicles were engaged in the Belgian firefighting response, according to Walloon officials. Ground teams operated where terrain allowed, with farmers assisting in water supply for firefighting efforts. The fire was contained in accessible sectors, although flames advanced overnight in areas unreachable on foot. Residents of Sourbrodt were permitted to return home Monday night, while some inhabitants of Küchelscheid remained displaced. Authorities maintained closures on several roads and reservoir sites to ensure emergency access was preserved.

Cross-border Teams Bolster Efforts in Spain

In Spain, France contributed 104 ground firefighters and 36 vehicles to support firefighting teams in Aragón. The region had already seen approximately 16,000 hectares burn when the European deployment was announced. The forestry authority in Aragón designated 14 fire danger zones as red alert for Aug. 18, up from eight on Monday. The official bulletin indicated very high or fully available dead fuels across central and northern parts of the region. French teams joined Spanish firefighters already engaged in fighting fires across the affected areas.

Satellite imagery is aiding emergency services across Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service produces rapid mapping to help authorities evaluate burned regions and coordinate field operations. This geospatial data provides critical information during active wildfire emergencies. Additionally, the European Commission manages cross-border support offers and finances transportation and operational costs linked to deployments. The satellite service supplies essential geospatial information to guide response efforts during natural disasters.

European Union Coordinated Response to Multiple Fire Emergencies

The civil protection framework enables nations under threat to request assistance when their own resources are stretched thin. The Emergency Response Coordination Centre manages incoming requests, matches offers, and facilitates the movement of personnel and equipment. As of 2026, Europe’s joint firefighting fleet includes 22 aircraft and five helicopters. To prepare for major incidents, authorities prepositioned 777 firefighters from 14 countries—namely Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. These reserve resources are available for deployment during large-scale emergencies.

In Belgium, the response involves a combination of aircraft, helicopters, ground units, drones, and local logistical support under a coordinated emergency response. Spain’s firefighting efforts have been bolstered by French reinforcements providing additional personnel and vehicles. Across Europe, satellite imagery continues to support national agencies managing various wildfire crises. The Civil Protection Mechanism mobilizes international assistance upon requests from affected countries through the European coordination system. Both Belgium and Spain have activated this process amid the current surge of wildfires across the continent.
