ST. EGYDEN AM STEINFELD, Austria / RankWire.AI / – Authorities responsible for emergency management in Austria issued mandatory evacuation directives on Friday following the rapid spread of a forest blaze in the Föhrenwald pine woods close to St. Egyden am Steinfeld. Officials from the area confirmed that a significant wildfire has impacted St. Egyden in Austria, with fierce flames coming within 50 meters of residential zones, prompting the activation of the highest emergency response level, Level B4. Civil defense teams prioritized the quick relocation of residents along Bahnstraße and in the Waldstrandsiedlung housing estate.

Coordination between municipal authorities and regional disaster response units resulted in the safe evacuation of over 250 individuals from the danger zone. St. Egyden Mayor Christa Tisch reported that emergency crews evacuated six homes on Bahnstraße and 50 units in five apartment complexes in the Waldstrandsiedlung district. Those displaced were taken to a temporary shelter at the Saubersdorf volunteer fire station, where humanitarian personnel provided crisis aid and vital supplies.

More than 700 firefighters from 84 regional fire departments across the districts of Neunkirchen and Wiener Neustadt responded swiftly to the incident. Firefighters worked alongside aerial containment units, deploying five police helicopters, two private commercial planes, and a Black Hawk helicopter supplied by the Austrian Armed Forces. The Austrian Red Cross dispatched 44 emergency personnel and 21 specialized vehicles to oversee evacuation efforts and assist affected families.

This event marks the second destructive blaze within the Föhrenwald area in less than two weeks, following an earlier 100-hectare forest fire that required a five-day firefighting operation. Disaster officials confirmed that the new fire started on the opposite side of the forest, with strong winds carrying thick smoke plumes over regional transit routes. Authorities advised motorists to avoid main roads near Neunkirchen to ensure unobstructed passage for emergency responders.

Lower Austrian State Fire Department spokesperson Klaus Stebal confirmed that emergency crews set up containment barriers around the core of the fire to prevent further expansion. They also tackled smaller fires that ignited spontaneously in nearby communities such as Strelzhof and Netting. Officials emphasized that strict operational shifts were enforced, limiting ground crews to no more than 12 hours of active work during the intense suppression operations.

No Injuries Reported During Initial Emergency Response, Say Medical Teams

Preliminary investigations by state law enforcement agencies are underway to determine the precise cause of the fire ignition this afternoon. Authorities noted that the prior wildfire in the same pine forest was caused by remnants of World War II phosphorus ammunition buried beneath the ground. While no direct link between the two fires has been established, environmental conditions across Lower Austria remain extremely dry, increasing regional wildfire risks.

Emergency services maintained continuous surveillance around the Föhrenwald perimeter through Friday evening to secure nearby residential areas. As a major wildfire impacts St. Egyden in Austria, civil defense officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among residents or responders during the initial evacuation. Technical engineers and forestry specialists anticipate ongoing perimeter stabilization and hot-spot mitigation in the coming days.
