BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – In a significant announcement on public health, Belgian research institute Sciensano disclosed that in 2022, deaths linked to excessively high body mass index totaled 9,509. This figure makes up 8.2 percent of all fatalities in Belgium for that year, indicating an average of over one death per hour associated with weight-related health issues. Through an initial assessment of population-wide BMI-related mortality, scientists found that health conditions connected to obesity led to more than 150,000 years of life lost overall.

Belgium health data shows obesity linked to 8.2% of deaths
European medical organizations track metabolic risk factors to develop health policy guidance.

This extensive epidemiological study focused on the underlying causes of death to understand how increased body mass index influences chronic illnesses. The research identified cardiovascular problems as the main factor behind the fatalities, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 deaths. Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease and other types of dementia, were the second leading cause, linked to 1,652 deaths. Other significant contributors were cerebrovascular diseases, which accounted for 1,171 deaths, as well as chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers.

Analysis of demographic data reveals that the risk of death from excess weight rises considerably with age. Older adults aged 65 and above experienced the greatest number of health issues related to obesity. Gender comparisons show that male mortality rates generally surpass female rates across most age groups; however, women aged 85 and older recorded higher overall death numbers, a trend attributed to their longer average lifespan, according to epidemiologists.

Regional Disparities Show Cardiovascular Issues as Leading Cause of Weight-Related Deaths

Regional analysis across Belgium revealed notable differences in death rates associated with obesity. The southern region of Wallonia registered the highest mortality rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The Brussels-Capital Region followed, with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 residents. Flanders displayed the lowest impact, recording 73.60 deaths per 100,000 people. Experts attribute these regional variations to differences in socioeconomic conditions, dietary habits, and healthcare accessibility across the Belgian federation.

This data release coincides with ongoing policy evaluations led by the Federal Public Service Health, responsible for overseeing national health initiatives. Public health officials are analyzing these results to assess the long-term economic strain on healthcare resources caused by chronic non-communicable diseases. The researchers employed a comparative risk assessment method, calculating the population attributable fraction for each condition to establish baseline estimates that will guide future preventive strategies.

Dementia and Alzheimer Disease Responsible for Over Sixteen Hundred Deaths

At the European level, organizations like the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor metabolic risk factors similar to those in Belgium to shape regional health policies. The Belgian report aligns with broader European Union efforts aimed at reducing premature deaths caused by non-communicable illnesses. The World Health Organization continues to advocate for integrated, multi-sectoral approaches emphasizing public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention to address these risks.

These findings provide a data-driven foundation for health authorities seeking to decrease high body mass index prevalence across Western Europe. By quantifying mortality figures and years of life lost, public health strategies can be better directed toward screening programs, intervention initiatives, and lifestyle modifications. As regional health agencies review this information, national frameworks are expected to intensify efforts on early prevention to lower the rate of chronic diseases nationwide.
